Dinah Pinney was born on 11 January, 1956 in Boone, North Carolina. After graduating from Watauga High School in 1974 she enlisted in the U.S. Army for a two-year program to go to Germany. Pinney did her basic training at Fort Jackson in South Carolina and advanced training at Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland. When she was stationed in Kaiserslautern, Germany she worked in service and evacuation, keeping track of work orders and doing canvas repairs. When Pinney returned to the U.S. she left the military but stayed on Fort Carson, Colorado with her husband who had reenlisted.
